Winnetka Public Schools District 36 Site Visit: Progressive Education in the 21st Century

Thursday, April 6
8:00 am – 1:30 pm
*Additional pre-registration required.

Located in Winnetka, Illinois, minutes from Chicago, The Winnetka Public Schools District 36 is a pre-K through 8 public school district with a rich history of Progressive Education. Teachers are inspired to find meaningful and relevant ways to engage students in digital learning while holding tight to a Progressive philosophy. CoSN participants will have the opportunity to visit three of Winnetka’s innovative spaces, Hubbard Woods IDEA Lab, The Skokie School MakerSpace, and Carleton Washburne School’s CoLab where students and teachers are fully engaged in year two of a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) launch.

For a number of years, Winnetka School District teachers have been leveraging technology to enhance instruction, but now that each student (in grades 5-8) has an iPad, it has opened up greater opportunities. Teachers use technology to more efficiently and effectively meet the needs of diverse learners. Students use technology to organize their work, to communicate and collaborate, and to demonstrate learning in a variety of ways allowing students to express themselves authentically. Teachers take advantage of technology to leverage student voice and choice and provide opportunities for experiential learning.

Winnetka Public Schools District 36 is very proud of its STEAM spaces, now in their second year at three schools and starting in our remaining two elementary schools. This STEAM spaces were created with a focus on The Design Thinking Process and supporting students in growing their key skills of communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.   Enjoy a tour of our STEAM spaces to learn how innovation fosters teaching and learning.  Observe classrooms where even the youngest learners engage in powerful learning enhanced by technology.
